HLS 114 - Maryland and Terrorism

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
Introduces students to the potential threats that can affect the typical citizen. Provides thoughtful suggestions as to how to enhance personal security. Examines the efforts of local, state and federal governments to combat terrorism. Also explores the impact terrorist threats have on local societies.

Prerequisite(s): HLS 111 or permission of director.

Note: Typically offered at MC and OL; fall and spring terms.

Course Outcomes:

Demonstrate the ability to properly interpret and apply essential information
- Analyze and describe functioning terrorist organizations.
- Define the potential threat to the typical citizen.
- Analyze and describe the historical patters of terrorists and terrorist organizations.
- Analyze and describe the role of the media.
Examine, calculate and project outcomes from possible terrorist threats and natural disasters likely to occur in Maryland.
- Explain the efforts and coordination between local, state and federal governments to combat and respond to terrorism.
- Project future actions to locally combat terrorism.
Evaluate personal accountability and resourcefulness toward responding to terrorist threats and attacks.
- Assess personal preparedness
- Identify response agencies in proximity to personal residence
- Create a written personal security and protection plan
