HUS 233 - Traumatic Brain Injury in Military and Veteran Populations3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. Explore mechanisms of traumatic brain injury in the veteran and military populations. Identify common cognitive, affective and communication changes in brain injured patients. Learn the impact of brain injury on daily functioning. Survey current research on traumatic brain injury and the rehabilitative process. Investigate treatment, rehabilitation, and counseling strategies and interventions.

Course Outcomes:
- Classify brain anatomy functioning.
- Distinguish between types of brain injuries: Acquired (strokes, TIA, aneurisms), Traumatic (hemorrhage, contusion, laceration, diffuse axonal injury), closed head injury, and open head injury.
- Review neurological characteristics of Blast Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI).
- Apply appropriate treatment interventions for traumatic brain injuries.
- Articulate counseling strategies and community resources for persons with traumatic brain injuries and their families.
