MAT 146 - Precalculus 23 credit hours - 3 hours weekly; one term. Formerly MAT 142 - College Algebra and Trigonometry 2
This course meets the Mathematics General Education Requirement
Study trigonometry and advanced algebra to prepare for calculus. Trigonometric topics include angle measurement, definitions of the six trigonometric functions from the right triangle and unit circle perspectives, graphs, identities, inverses and equations. Algebraic topics include conic sections, polar coordinates, and a review of functions and graphs.
Prerequisite(s): MAT 145 (formerly MAT 141).
Note: Credit is not given for both MAT 146 and MAT 151 . Typically offered at MC, AM, and OL; all terms.
Course Outcomes:
- solve equations involving trigonometric, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, radical, and absolute value expressions.
- simplify expressions involving compound fractions, absolute values, the difference quotient, and trigonometric identities.
- graph trigonometric, polynomial, piecewise defined, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions, as well as conic sections.
- model problems from the natural and social sciences with the appropriate algebraic or trigonometric equation or function, and solve the problem mathematically.
