LGS 242 - Medical Insurance Law

1 credit hour - 15 hours; one term.
Studies the impact of state and federal laws upon health care, managed care and insurance. Covers eligibility for Medicare and Medicaid. Course also focuses on the Comprehensive Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), portability, the scope of coverage and billing and payment under public and private insurances.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast Medicare and Medicaid.
  2. List the eligibility requirements for Medicare and Medicaid.
  3. Interpret provisions of a health insurance contract.
  4. Prepare claim and cost report.
  5. Identify activities that constitute insurance fraud and abuse.
  6. Compare and contrast traditional group health insurance and health maintenance organizations.
  7. Analyze federal and state laws and apply such laws to specific factual scenarios.
