MLT 100 - Introduction to the Medical Laboratory4 credit hours - 45 hours of lecture and 30 laboratory; one term. Formerly MLT 100 Introduction to the Medical Laboratory 1
Apply basic principles and practices of laboratory medicine in clinical hematology, immunology and microbiology. Develop familiarity with the blood bank and the study of body fluids, including urinalysis. Demonstrate laboratory activities including specimen-handling and phlebotomy procedures. Students will perform phlebotomy procedures on one another. Prepare for entry-level jobs as medical laboratory assistants in hospitals, medical laboratories and physician office laboratories. Lab fee $170.
Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into the Medical Laboratory Technician Program or permission of the MLT Program Coordinator.
Note: Typically offered at MC; fall term.
Course Outcomes: 1. Conduct basic analysis of laboratory results;
2. Perform basic laboratory procedures, such as: phlebotomy and venipuncture, obtaining and procuring blood and nonblood type specimens;
3. Use specialized equipment to obtain laboratory values for blood and nonblood specimens;
4. Relate laboratory testing results to theory as demonstrated by normal and abnormal values;
5. Apply specific testing types for specialty areas in clinical and pathology laboratory settings;
6. Perform quality assurance testing on automated and manual testing equipment;
7. Write scientific and research reports related to laboratory medicine.
