MLT 278 - Clinical Microbiology Practicum

2 credit hours - 120 hours clinical; one term.
Apply practical theory and skills learned in previous MLT courses in the clinical microbiology laboratory setting under the supervision of a clinical preceptor. Students will rotate through the areas of a clinical microbiology laboratory either through simulation or at an assigned clinical rotation laboratory or a combination of both. Clinical fee $60.

Prerequisite(s): MLT 202  with a grade of C or better, or permission of the MLT Program Coordinator.

Note: Typically offered OF; spring and summer terms.

Course Outcomes:
1. Identify the areas in the clinical laboratory setting, including common specialty areas such as wounds, anaerobes and blood cultures

2.    Procure patient/client specimens and process according to procedures and clinical site policies
3.    Perform calculations such as urine colony counts, and calculations associated with preparing test solutions, such as additives, preservatives, and buffers.

4.    Document results using the appropriate metric measurements and site specified methods, such as laboratory information systems

5.    Perform quality checks on automated and manual equipment

6.    Perform microbiological testing, including attaining the specimen under aseptic technique, preparing culture media, performing staining techniques, and correctly using a microscope.

7.    Maintain federal and state regulations for standard precautions and OSHA
8.    State parameters for normal and abnormal microbiology results related to body systems and their implications on a patient’s health. 

9.   Correlate the effects of healthy vs non healthy choices and their effects on body systems.
