MUS 100 - Music Appreciation

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This course meets the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement. 

A nontechnical course for those who wish to enrich their music enjoyment by listening to performances from varying sources ranging from the classical tradition to contemporary jazz. Topics include listening techniques, basic musical forms and the social and historical context for musical creation and popular taste. No previous training in music is required.

Note: Typically offered at MC and OL; all terms.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Discuss musical topics using appropriate terminology.

2. Identify representative components of select musical styles exemplary of historical periods in Western music history.

3. Identify significant Western art music composers and their musical compositions.

4. Apply understanding of stylistic trends through aural recognition.

5. Explain basic concepts in music, such as rhythm, meter dynamics, tempo, melody, harmony, mode and form.

6. Demonstrate active listening technique.

7. Apply critical thinking skills to deconstruct component parts of a piece of music.
