MUS 163 - Highlights of Music History: Keyboard Masterpieces

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This study of music for keyboard instruments introduces students to great music literature from early organ and harpsichord compositions to works for contemporary synthesizers.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Demonstrate a general knowledge of music for the keyboard from its beginnings to the present day.

2. Articulate the elements of the sonata form and its application to keyboard compositions.

3. Articulate an understanding of important works composed for the harpsicord and piano.

4. Articulate the relationship between keyboard works and their social, intellectual, and cultural origins.

5. Be able to trace the changes in keyboard styles from the Baroque through Classical and Romantic periods to the modern synthesizer.
