MUS 261 - History of Music 2

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly, one term.
Survey the development of music in the western world from the late baroque period through the nineteenth century.

Emphasis is placed on stylistic analysis of the music.

Prerequisite(s): MUS 101  or permission of department.

Note: Although MUS 260 and MUS 261 can be taken in either order, the sequential order is recommended. Typically offered at MC; fall and spring terms.

Course Outcomes:
1. Identify significant Western art music composers and works from the late Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods.

2. Analyze components of select musical styles and compositions exemplary of the late Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods.

3. Apply understanding of stylistic trends through aural recognition and score analysis of music of the late Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods.

4. Evaluate social and cultural trends that give shape to musical expression of the late Baroque, Classical, and Romantic periods.
