NUR 100 - Patient Care Technician/Geriatric Nursing Assistant6 credit hours - 45 hours of lecture, 30 hours of college laboratory and 60 hours of clinical practice per course; one term. Develop skills to function as a patient care assistant in the hospital setting. Engage in lecture, simulated practice of nursing skills in college laboratory and clinical practice in the hospital and extended-care facility. Students practice selected procedures on each other during college laboratory. The Maryland Board of Nursing has approved this course as meeting requirements to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. The State of Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has endorsed this course as meeting requirements for the state registry exam for geriatric nursing assistants. There is a fee for the state registry exam. Lab fee $50.
Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into the Patient Care Technician program or permission of the department chair.
Course Outcomes: - Describe the roles, responsibilities and legal/ethical issues related to the scope of practice of the patient care technician / GNA.
- Completely and safely perform those skills required by the Board of Nursing for a certified nursing assistant on patients in acute, sub-acute and long term care facilities.
- Accurately receive, report, and document essential information on patient’s conditions and status of care in a timely manner.
- Establish and maintain appropriate communication using therapeutic communication techniques with patients, peers, family members, staff and nursing faculty.
- Prioritize and implement patient care in an organized and efficient manner.
- Describe the care of patients throughout the life span.
- Demonstrate knowledge of principles and related rationales of interventions when administering patient care.
