PBH 203 - Health Education Promotion3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. Gain an introduction to the profession of health education, including historical overview, terminology and discussions regarding locations and agencies where health education theory is being practiced. Focus on the potential impact of healthcare reform and how prevention research and health promotion will be integrated into the future of the US and global healthcare systems.
Prerequisite(s): PBH 101 , PBH 102 , and PBH 105 , or permission of the department chair.
Note: This course has a service learning requirement. Typically offered OL; fall and spring terms.
Course Outcomes: 1. List and explain the goals and objectives of health education/promotion.
2. Describe the current status of health education/promotion.
3. Trace the history of public health in the United States.
4. Identify and briefly explain the behavior change theories and their components used in health education/promotion.
5. Identify ethical issues associated with the profession of health education/promotion
6. List and describe the major responsibilities of a health education specialist.
7. Explain the differences among certification, licensure and accreditation.
8. Identify the primary professional associations/organizations and coalitions associated with health education/promotion.
9. Compare and contrast the roles of health education specialists in the four practice settings.
10. Evaluate the role of the health education specialist in addressing the increasing costs of health care.
11. Apply the public health approach- problem, cause, intervention and implementation to a new public health problem.
