PHE 234 - Hatha Yoga

1 credit hour - Two hours weekly; one term.
Learn beginner Hatha yoga postures, yogic breathing practices and the foundations of meditation. Apply mindfulness-based methods including somatosensory awareness, centering and a variety of techniques for focusing the mind. Develop physical strength and flexibility while relieving stress and cultivating inner resiliency through the regular practice of Hatha yoga. Improvements in balance, coordination, and mobility are additional benefits of weekly class participation. Emphasis is placed on creating compassionate connections with body, mind, and emotion at all levels of individual practice.

Note: Typically offered at MC; fall and spring terms.

Course Outcomes:
At the end of course each student should be able to: 

1) Identify and discuss the general history, philosophy, and methodology of Hatha Yoga. 

2) Describe and perform pranayama breathing techniques and demonstrate four distinct practices. 

3) Demonstrate the proper alignment of beginner level hatha yoga poses and stretches utilizing modifications as appropriate. 

4) Identify and discuss benefits of mindfulness-based practices, and the variety of modalities available to practitioners of all backgrounds, physical capacities, and interests. 

5) Research and design a personal practice program specifically for the individual. 

6) Develop strategies for enhancing motivation and creating mindful habits as vehicles for maintaining regular contemplative practices. 

7) Explain the importance of focused attention, neutral awareness, compassion, and other components of mindfulness and meditation on mental and physical health and overall well-being.
