PSY 223 - Social Psychology

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This course meets the Social and Behavioral Sciences General Education Requirement. This course meets the Diversity Requirement.

Examine the theoretical orientations and research on social perception, impression management, interpersonal relations, attitude change, conformity and leadership.

Prerequisite(s): PSY 111  or PSY 111H  or permission of department chair.

Note: Typically offered at MC and OL; fall, spring, and summer terms.

Course Outcomes:
 

  1. Define social psychology and identify the most influential historical perspectives that guide this field of study.
  2. Describe the steps of the scientific method and how explanations of human social behavior are dependent on continual data collection and assessment.
  3. Explain how culture and nature work together to determine social human behavior.
  4. Describe the processes of self-knowledge and the function of self-presentation.
  5. Define social cognition and describe how attributes affect our social interactions.
  6. Define attitude and summarize how attitudes are formed, maintained and modified.
  7. Identify and summarize the principals and techniques of social influence and persuasion.
  8. Define, describe and compare prosocial and aggressive behavior in human relations.
  9. Discuss the concept of prejudice, its roots and role in stereotyping and discrimination.
  10. Identify and describe principals of interpersonal attraction and the nature of close relationships. 
  11. Describe the characteristics of groups, organizations and the role of culture.
