PSY 224 - Multicultural Psychology3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. This course meets the Diversity Requirement.
Examine the role of culture in the psychological development of individuals and groups. Explore topics such as privilege, sexuality and gender, abnormal psychology, motivation, development, violence and social interaction.
Prerequisite(s): PSY 111 or PSY 111H or permission of department chair.
Note: Typically offered at MC, AM, and OL; fall and spring terms.
Course Outcomes:
- Acquire knowledge multicultural role identities and schemas.
- Illustrate and define cross-cultural terminology that assesses the experience of multiple ethnicities.
- Assess and appraise theoretical perspectives regarding ethnicity and the application in the role socialization.
- Understand better the advantages and disadvantages that come with cultural privilege and the expectations produced within and outside of dominate culture in communities.
- Appraise the various historical trends that have arisen.
- Predict future directions in the field of Multicultural Psychology.
- Assess important current contributions in the field.
- Describe the impact of peripheral issues such as physical health issues, potential mental health complexities and workplace dynamics.
- Identify specific health-related issues related to culture.
- Develop an understanding of the cultural and ethnic experience in the workplace.
- Describe mental health concerns related to the stressors intrinsic to culture and ethnicity experience.
- Explain the origins and specific issues related to culture and ethnicity and violence.
- Describe the dynamics involved in the issue of violence.
- Develop an understanding of the dynamics of hate crime and genocide.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the impact of ethnic identity in relation to gender identity experience.
- Analyze the cultural influences related to the experience of gender.
- Evaluate the impact of ethnicity and social class in the lives of men and women of different cultures.
- Demonstrate an understanding of relationship dynamics and sexuality in relation to culture.
- Describe the social development of culture and ethnicity.
