SOC 213 - Marriage and the Family3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. Survey of the dynamics of life in families. A view of the family as a changing social unit and implications of these changes for the individual. Reviews social forces that influence mating and dating, marriage and divorce, and deals with topics of love, sexuality, parenting, aging and death.
Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for ENG 101 /ENG 101A .

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Understand the social, cultural, and political nature of marriage and the benefits and obligations it confers.
- Identify different family forms and explain the effect of family form on social structures and vice versa.
- Recognize the role of the family in socialization throughout the life course.
- Explain how norms of family structure and care subsidize other social structures including the economy and the labor market.
- Recognize diversity in contemporary families.
