SPT 232 - Sport Psychology

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
Explore the field of sport and exercise psychology. Topics include the psychological aspects of competitive and recreational sports with emphasis on current psychological theories and field research.

Prerequisite(s): PSY 111  or permission of department chair.

Note: Typically offered OL; fall, spring, and summer terms.

Course Outcomes:
 

  • Acquire knowledge of the psychological factors that influence participation and performance in sport, exercise, and physical education settings.
    • Illustrate the various factors that affect involvement in sport.
    • Assess and appraise the importance of specific psychological factors in different settings, from competitive to recreational sport.
  • Understand the relevant historical and professional issues in the field of sport psychology.
    • Appraise the various historical trends that have arisen in the field.
    • Predict future directions in sport psychology.
    • Assess important current contributions in the field.
  • Describe interventions used in sport psychology.
    • Identify interventions used in specific situations in applied sport psychology.
    • Develop an understanding of how to construct applied sport psychology interventions.
    • Describe the means by which to measure the success of interventions.
  • Explain the issues related to participation in sport and recreational activities.
    • Describe the potential barriers that might exist in reaching optimal performance.
    • Develop procedures by which one can avoid impediments to progress in attaining optimal performance.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge of the various forms of leadership in sport psychology.
    • Analyze various forms of leadership.
