SGT 100 - Principles of Surgical Technology 1

4 credit hours - 45 lecture hours and 30 lab hours; one term.
Explore concepts in pharmacology and pathophysiology. Demonstrate basic pre-operative procedures relevant to the surgical setting. Lab fee $60.

Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into the Surgical Technology Program.

Corequisite(s): BIO 223 .

Note: Typically offered OL; spring term.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Discuss the history of surgical technology, the role of the surgical technologist, and the importance of professional credentials in the healthcare environment.
  2. Define and diagram the management structure of the surgical services department and physical design of the O.R.
  3. Discuss the legal, ethical, and moral responsibilities of the surgical team.
  4. Discuss the needs and care of the surgical patient as a whole person.
  5. Describe principles of communication and teamwork found in the surgical setting.
  6. Recognize the principles related to decontamination and the sterilization process.
  7. Explain principles of asepsis and demonstrate proper sterile technique when performing preoperative surgical duties.
  8. Demonstrate knowledge of preoperative procedures relevant to the safe care of the surgical patient.
