SGT 100 - Principles of Surgical Technology 14 credit hours - 45 lecture hours and 30 lab hours; one term. Explore concepts in pharmacology and pathophysiology. Demonstrate basic pre-operative procedures relevant to the surgical setting. Lab fee $60.
Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into the Surgical Technology Program.
Corequisite(s): BIO 223 .
Note: Typically offered OL; spring term.
Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Discuss the history of surgical technology, the role of the surgical technologist, and the importance of professional credentials in the healthcare environment.
- Define and diagram the management structure of the surgical services department and physical design of the O.R.
- Discuss the legal, ethical, and moral responsibilities of the surgical team.
- Discuss the needs and care of the surgical patient as a whole person.
- Describe principles of communication and teamwork found in the surgical setting.
- Recognize the principles related to decontamination and the sterilization process.
- Explain principles of asepsis and demonstrate proper sterile technique when performing preoperative surgical duties.
- Demonstrate knowledge of preoperative procedures relevant to the safe care of the surgical patient.
