SPT 244 - Sports and Diversity3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. Explore the historical and modern-day status of diversity in sports. Assess opportunities available in sports for diverse groups and potential issues that occur during actual involvement. Discuss race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and disability as they relate to sports.
Course Outcomes:
- Construct a framework by which to understand how diversity issues enter into sports
- Organize the various ways in which sports and diversity interset.
- Appraise the significance of the specific ways that diversity and sports intersect.
- Elaborate on the affective, behavioral and cognitive characteristics of individuals and groups who participate in sport and athletics.
- Categorize the various characteristics of individuals and groups in reference to sports and athletics.
- Assess the manner in which society shapes attitudes towards sports and the individuals who are associated with sports.
- Appraise the history and evolution of sports culture from the perspective of players, fans, and society as a whole.
- Document historical trends as it relates to sports and how it has viewed diversity and culture.
- Assess and appraise the progress made in areas of diversity in sports.
- Assess the positive and negative aspects of sports within our culture.
