ENG 223H - The British Novel - Honors3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. This is an honors course.
This course meets the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement.
Study representative British novels from the 18th century to the present. Discuss matters of theme and style as well as developments in the form of the novel. Explore major cultural and literary currents reflected in the works.
Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for Honors courses and ENG 101 /ENG 101A or permission of department chair.
Crosslisted: Also offered as ENG 223 ; credit is not given for both ENG 223H and ENG 223 .
Note: Complete and present an honors capstone research project that extends beyond the classroom. Typically offered at MC and OL; fall and spring terms.
Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Describe elements of the British novel from its beginning to the present;
- Explain the themes and approaches characteristic of the British novel;
- Analyze and evaluate representative British novels;
- Explain the relationship of the novels to their intellectual, social, and cultural backgrounds;
- Identify and trace the changes in novelistic form and techniques;
- Write analytically about British novels;
- Practice close textual analysis through the application of critical reading skills.
