GER 225 - Modern German Civilization and Culture 1

3 credit hours - Three hours lecture weekly; one term.
Study the culture and civilization of German-speaking Europe from the Enlightenment to the early twentieth century. Develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Taught in German.

Prerequisite(s): GER 212  or four years of high school German or permission of department chair.

Note: Not for native speakers.

Course Outcomes:
  • Explain in general terms the modern history of Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and other German-speaking territories.
    • Discuss the geography of German-speaking Europe from the Congress of Vienna to the Weimar Republic.
    • Describe 18th and 19th century German society.
    • Explain the unification of Germany and the formation of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
    • Explain the causes of World War I.
    • Discuss the events of World War I, the Treaty of Versailles, and their aftermath.
    • Discuss the formation of the Weimar Republic and the Republic of Austria.
  • Describe aspects of the arts in German-speaking Europe.
    • Discuss the importance of representative poetry and fiction by German, Swiss, and Austrian authors.
    • Discuss the importance of representative theatrical works by German, Swiss, and Austrian authors.
    • Identify representative works of art by German, Swiss, and Austrian artists.
    • List major movements, composers, and works in German and Austrian music.
  • Describe German-language societies and cultures in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries.
    • Describe the political systems of German-speaking Europe from the Congress of Vienna to the Weimar Republic.
    • Discuss the economic systems of 18th, 19th, and early 20th century Europe.
    • Discuss aspects of social interaction in early industrial-era European society.
