EDU 229 - Observing and Assessing Young Children

1 credit hour - 3 hours weekly; 5 weeks.
Learn about the importance of observation and assessment in evaluating young children. Identify appropriate observation methods, interpret collected data and apply assessment to the children and classroom. Recognize and implement observation techniques to create teaching strategies that enhance children’s development.

Prerequisite(s): EDU 132  or permission of department chair.

Note: Typically offered OL; fall term.

Course Outcomes:
a.   Describe the purpose of and guidelines for using observation as a tool for assessing young children.

b.   Identify observational methods for collecting and assessing young children in the various developmental domains.

c.   Explain the legal, ethical and professional responsibilities of the educator in using observations to assess young children.

d.   Accurately interpret observational data to assess young children.

e.   Compare and contrast standardized testing vs. individual assessment of young children.
