CHE 213H - Organic Chemistry 1 - Honors4 credit hours - Three hours of lecture and three hours of laboratory weekly; one term. This is an honors course.
Study the chemistry of hydrocarbons and their simple derivatives, emphasizing their structures, properties and mechanisms of reactions. Use general laboratory techniques and procedures in organic chemistry and learn modern methods of analysis, including gas chromatography. Lab fee $70.
Prerequisite(s): CHE 112 or CHE 112H and eligibility for Honors courses.
Crosslisted: Also offered as CHE 213 ; credit is not given for both CHE 113 and CHE 213H or CHE 213H and CHE 213 .
Course Outcomes: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of bonding, structure, molecular properties and related concepts, and the fundamental characteristics of organic compounds.
2. Demonstrate an understanding* of the chemistry of the alkanes and cycloalkanes.
3. Analyze and describe the types of organic reactions.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the chemistry of the alkenes.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of the chemistry of the alkynes.
6. Design organic syntheses.
7. Explain the salient features and implications of center(s) of chirality in a compound.
8. Demonstrate an understanding of organohalides.
9. Demonstrate an understanding of nucleophilic substitution and elimination reaction mechanisms.
10. Demonstrate an understanding of conjugated dienes.
11. Explain aromaticity, determine whether a compound is aromatic, and name certain aromatic compounds.
12. Develop skill in organic laboratory techniques and procedures such as safety, determining melting points/boiling points, distilling, recrystallizing, using chromatographic techniques (thin layer, column, and gas), and other fundamental techniques.
13. Develop skill in database information retrieval and effectively communicating laboratory results.
