ART 234 - Painting and Abstraction3 credit hours - Two hours of lecture and two hours of laboratory weekly; one term. Discover the history of abstraction with a focus on painting. Learn abstraction as an artistic concept and as a technique for creating artwork. Create abstract paintings using a variety of materials and methodologies. Develop your own creative vision when making an abstract painting through independent projects, demonstrations, and critiques. Lab fee $40.
Prerequisite(s): ART 125 or permission of department chair.
Note: May be repeated for credit; a total of 6 credits may be earned. Typically offered at MC; fall term.
Course Outcomes: At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain abstraction as a concept and a technique for creating art
- Discuss the history of abstraction in art with a focus on painting
- Identify the major movements and developments in abstract painting that have occurred throughout art history
- Utilize a variety of materials and methodologies to create their own abstract paintings, including drawing, collage, and technology when appropriate
- Develop their own creative vision when making an abstract painting
- Critique abstract artwork intelligently, utilizing vocabulary and a level of discourse appropriate to the subject matter
