HTC 204 - Genetics, Microbiology and Pathogenic Diseases of the Body

3 credit hours - Three hours of lecture weekly; one term.
Explore the basics of genetics and pathogenic causes of disease in the human body, beginning with basic cell structure and progressing through the role of inflammation and infection by microorganisms to the disease process. Learn the repercussions of changes to DNA on genomic expressions through tumor formation or other pathological changes. General pathology and body system approach.

Prerequisite(s): HTC 101  with a grade of C or better.

Corequisite(s): HTC 201 .

Course Outcomes:

  1. Describe the components of cell biology, and the cell’s response to stress and toxic insult, inflammation, and repair.
  2. Identify the major pathogenic microorganisms, viruses, and parasites that cause infectious diseases.
  3. Differentiate the disease or disorders caused by recessive or dominant genetic inheritance, the diseases of the immune system, and hemodynamic disorders.
  4. Discuss the different types of neoplasms and associated body organ, and their effects on the human body.
  5. Describe the pathology of the cardiovascular/lung system.
  6. Describe the pathology of the digestive system.
  7. Describe the pathology of the kidney and urinary tract system.
  8. Describe the pathology of male and female genital systems.

  10. Describe the pathology of the skin, bones, joints and soft tissues.
  11. Describe the pathology of the central nervous system.
  12. Describe the pathology of the peripheral nerves and skeletal muscles.
  13. Describe the pathology of the eye.
