MAS 119 - Massage and Bodywork Specialized Modalities

3 credit hours - 30 hours lecture, 32 hours lab, 8 hours of clinic; one term
Explore massage and bodywork modalities such as sports massage, spa and aromatherapy massage, hot stone massage, foot reflexology, chair massage, and energy work. Learn how to integrate these specialized modalities into massage therapy practice. Discuss how to find reputable continuing education courses to obtain advanced training in a variety of specialized modalities. Lab fee $25.

Prerequisite(s): A grade of C or better in MAS 110, or permission of the Academic Chair.

Note: Typically offered at MC; fall and spring terms.

Course Outcomes:

  1. Explain the difference between massage and bodywork.
  2. Classify various types of massage therapy and bodywork.
  3. Define and describe specialized massage and bodywork modalities and their applications and benefits.
  4. Identify the cautions and contraindications for a variety of specialized modalities. 
  5. Practice introductory techniques of each modality presented.
  6. Integrate various modalities into client-centered massage therapy sessions.
  7. Identify options for continuing education for advanced training in a variety of specialized modalities.
