LPN 194 - Women, Newborns, Mental Health and Integration of Concepts in Practical Nursing

9 credit hours - 90 hours of lecture, 30 hours of directed lab and 105 hours of clinical per term; one term.
Learn essential principles, concepts and skills for providing care for the childbearing family, the mentally ill, and adults with emergent needs. Explore the roles of leadership and delegation. Integrate the role of the Practical Nurse through opportunities to provide client care in acute, community, and/or long-term settings. Lab fee $350. Clinical fee $275.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Care Provider: The nursing student integrates the utilization of the five (5) steps of the nursing process to facilitate and provide nursing care that is holistic, systematic, evidence-based, safe and grounded in understanding of the sciences, humanities, cultural diversity and nursing theory to women and newborn clients, mental health and medical-surgical clients.

  • Integrates and refines the use of the nursing process to provide safe and accurate nursing care to adult medical-surgical clients and their families in various settings.
  • Utilizes the use of the nursing process to provide safe and accurate nursing care to women and newborn clients and their families in various settings.
  • Utilizes and refines the use of the nursing process to provide safe and accurate nursing care to adult mental health clients and their families in various settings.
  • Delivers care that is holistic, systematic, evidence based, culturally sensitive and safe for adult medical-surgical clients, mental health clients, women and newborn clients and their families.

2. Investigator: The nursing student develops data analysis, question assumptions and approach all mental health clients, women and newborn clients and their families with a curiosity resulting in safe clinical decisions that improve the quality of care.

  • Recognizes, questions, and investigates deviations from optimum health status and uses these to guide safe clinical decisions for the complex adult medical-surgical client.
  • Analyzes variations along the developmental continuum in the individual adult medical-surgical client.
  • Skillfully utilizes multiple health care technologies to promote research, analysis, interpretation, and integration of data that aids in developing individualized nursing care plans for the adult medical-surgical client in a variety of settings.
