SGT 100 - Principles of Surgical Technology 1

3 credit hours - 45 lecture hours; one term.
Learn about the profession of surgical technology, healthcare facilities, and the legal and moral responsibilities related to caring for the surgical patient.

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the program or permission of the academic chair.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Discuss the history of surgical technology, the role of the surgical technologist, and the importance of professional credentials in the healthcare environment.
  2. Describe the management structure of the surgical services department and physical design of the O.R.
  3. Discuss the legal, ethical, and moral responsibilities of the surgical team.
  4. Describe principles of communication and teamwork found in the surgical setting.
  5. Discuss the needs and care of the surgical patient as a whole person.
  6. Identify emergencies in the surgical setting and outline components of healthcare facilities’ all hazards preparedness plans.
