SGT 100 - Principles of Surgical Technology 13 credit hours - 45 lecture hours; one term. Learn about the profession of surgical technology, healthcare facilities, and the legal and moral responsibilities related to caring for the surgical patient.
Prerequisite(s): Admission to the program or permission of the academic chair.
Corequisite(s): SGT 102 .

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Discuss the history of surgical technology, the role of the surgical technologist, and the importance of professional credentials in the healthcare environment.
- Describe the management structure of the surgical services department and physical design of the O.R.
- Discuss the legal, ethical, and moral responsibilities of the surgical team.
- Describe principles of communication and teamwork found in the surgical setting.
- Discuss the needs and care of the surgical patient as a whole person.
- Identify emergencies in the surgical setting and outline components of healthcare facilities’ all hazards preparedness plans.
