SGT 102 - Principles of Surgical Technology 2

6 credit hours - 45 hours of lecture and 90 hours of laboratory; one term.
Learn about the role of the surgical technologist and demonstrate the skills necessary to perform their duties as part of the surgical team. Related topics include surgical pharmacology and basic pathophysiology. Lab fee $500.

Prerequisite(s): Acceptance to the Surgical Technology Program or permission of academic chair.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain the principles of asepsis and the key elements of surgical conscience and demonstrate how they apply to every aspect of professional behavior.
  2. Analyze the steps involved in each phase of the perioperative process, including roles of the surgical team and patient care and safety principles.
  3. Demonstrate principles of communication and teamwork found in the surgical setting.
  4. Identify basic surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies and describe their care and use.
  5. Describe pharmacological methods, agents, and techniques used in the surgical setting.
  6. Explain the role of technology in healthcare and its impact in the surgical setting.
  7. Define and explain concepts and terminology related to basic pathophysiology.
  8. Perform a complete mock surgical procedure by implementing the knowledge and skills required to perform in the first scrub role.
