Learn more about the Human Services Degree Program

Purpose: To train graduates to work as human services generalists in a variety of entry-level positions in mental health, social work, human services administration, addictions and other human services occupations. Graduates can transfer to the School of Social Work at University of Maryland Baltimore County or can transfer to the University of Baltimore, which offers a bachelor of arts degree in Human Services Administration.

The A.A.S. degree in Human Services is accredited through the Council for Standards in Human Service Education. This accreditation assures that the program meets the required 20 standards. Accreditation allows human services graduates to apply to become a Nationally Certified Human Services Professional through the National Organization for Human Services (NOHS). AACC cannot confirm whether the course or program meets requirements for professional licensure in states other than Maryland.   If you plan to apply for licensure in a state other than Maryland, contact that state’s licensing board to determine whether the AACC course or program meets requirements for licensure in that state.  If you need assistance finding contact information for your state, or if you need additional information regarding professional licensure, please contact the School of Health Sciences at 410-777-7310.

Additional Program Requirements

Students are strongly encouraged to start in the fall term and follow the prescribed program in order to finish in two years. Students must maintain a grade of C or better in all human services and fieldwork courses. They also must perform satisfactorily in the fieldwork area in order to graduate. Three fieldwork courses include 100 clinical (unpaid) hours within each term.

Special Conditions

Statewide Program: This program of study may be designated a Health Manpower Shortage Tuition Reduction Program. This means that some residents of Maryland (see the Tuition, Fees and Payments  section of this catalog) enrolled in this program of study by the first day of the term may be eligible for in-county tuition rates for courses required for program completion. It is the student’s responsibility to confirm that this program still maintains a Health Manpower Shortage Program status before enrolling. Please refer to the college’s Accounts Receivable Office to confirm this designation.

Computer Competency Requirement

Program Outcomes


Upon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Have knowledge of the historical development of Human Services.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and an understanding of diverse cultures and incorporate the relevant needs of culturally diverse groups.
  • Have knowledge of human services individual, groups, family, organization, community and society and their interaction.
  • Be knowledgeable in the administrative aspects of service delivery.
  • Learn to assess clients, design and implement specific and measurable goals.
  • Address the conditions which promote or limit human functioning in the major human system.
  • Demonstrate basic counseling skills, techniques and social work practices in order to facilitate client services.
  • Identify client problems needing advocacy, have knowledge of community resources available to assist clients and coordinate care through integration of services.
  • Develop interpersonal skills with clients and team members and demonstrate professional behaviors.
  • Have an understanding of human services values and attitudes to promote ethical application and practice.
  • Develop an awareness of their own values, personalities, reaction patterns, interpersonal styles, limitations and self-care practices.
  • Complete 300 hours of fieldwork with the Human Services Department approved fieldwork agencies.
  • Apply meaningful connections between classroom learning and experiences in the field.
