Visual Arts and Humanities

Purpose: The graphic design certificate is intended for professionals already holding a degree who wish to make a career change or update skills in the graphic design industry. Credits earned for the certificate may be applied to the Visual Arts Professional AAS Graphic Design Area of Concentration. The program provides an introduction to the design process from concept to completion. This certificate is not a substitute for a degree in graphic design.

Special Conditions


Financial Aid: This program has not been approved by the U.S. Department of Education for eligibility for federal student aid. Certificate Graduation Requirements


To graduate with a certificate, students must have demonstrated eligibility for ENG 111  or ENG 115 .  See Academic Regulations for all Graduation Requirements.

  • Use different media to solve design problems.
  • Express a personal and/ or client’s point of view.
  • Use new technologies to express visual ideas.
  • Use math in formatting for print.
  • Present a thoughtful analysis based on research of a topic in art.
  • Appraise the primary historical periods and cultural trends in art and graphic design.
  • Apply critical thinking skills to talk and write about art and design.
  • Develop a professional portfolio of work, suitable to present at interviews for both transfer and job-related activities.
  • Communicate with a client about design projects.
  • Develop client-based design work in cooperation with the client.
  • Investigate typography and word usage within design.
  • Investigate different graphic formats.
