General Education and Diversity, Technology and Wellness Requirements


General Education Definition

General Education at Anne Arundel Community College is the foundational, interdisciplinary curriculum fostering knowledge, skills, and perspectives that enable critical thinking, global awareness, lifelong learning, and community engagement.

AACC General Education/State of Maryland: General Education Category Courses

These requirements are described in the Annotated Code of Maryland Title 13B standards .

Other AACC Requirement Courses

In addition to the above general education courses, all AACC degree students must fulfill a Diversity Requirement, a Technology Requirement, and a Wellness Requirement.

Diversity Requirement
Diversity Requirement Courses fall into two groups: General Education and Non General Education. Courses on the General Education list below can be used to satisfy the Diversity Requirement and a general education category. Courses on the Non General Education list below only satisfy the Diversity Requirement.
Technology Requirement
Technology Requirement Courses fall into two groups: General Education and Non General Education. Courses on the General Education list below can be used to satisfy the Technology Requirement and a general education category. Courses on the Non General Education list below only satisfy the Technology Requirement.
Wellness Requirement
Wellness Requirement Courses fall into two groups: General Education and Non General Education. Courses on the General Education list below can be used to satisfy the Wellness Requirement and a general education category. Courses on the Non General Education list below only satisfy the Wellness Requirement.

Special Note about Honors Program Courses and Approved Course Lists

If students qualify for the Honors Program, they may take honors versions of any approved courses (such as ENG 101H ENG 102H , etc.). Choose one of the areas below to see the approved general education and AACC degree required courses.  

AACC General Education Requirements for A.A., A.A.T., A.S., and A.S.E. degrees

Arts and Humanities 2 courses 6 credits
Social and Behavioral Sciences 2 courses 6 credits
Biological and Physical Sciences 2 courses (at least one must be a lab) 7-8 credits
Mathematics 1 course 3-4 credits
English Composition 2 courses 6 credits
General Education elective(s) Additional General Education coursework Must meet minimum required GE credits as specified by COMAR. (The degree requirements will specify the amount of general education courses required. Please refer to the appropriate program planner.)

*Note: Up to 36 credits of General Education coursework will transfer directly to a Maryland public four-year institution. It is to our students’ benefit for programs to include as many general education credits in their curriculum as possible.

Additional AACC Requirements for all degree programs
Diversity, Technology, and Wellness requirement may be achieved through one of the following:
  • Completion of an approved course
  • Completion of an approved general education course
  • CLEP or departmental exam
  • Transfer of an equivalent course from another higher education institution
  • Completion of an approved sequence of courses within a particular program
