ACH 226 - Advanced Kitchen and Bath Design

4 credit hours - Three hours of lecture and two hours of laboratory weekly; one term.
Learn skills necessary for complex kitchen and bath design. Covers advanced design techniques and deeper understanding of construction challenges and design solutions. Further incorporates NKBA Planning and Access Guidelines and presentation standards into kitchen and bath design. Focuses on creating complete project documents for larger upscale kitchens and baths and effectively communicating design solutions. Hand-drafting and computer aided drafting applications using 20/20 software area addressed. Projects are primarily residential with an additional focus on public facilities, codes and ADA. Lab fee $40.

Prerequisite(s): ACH 206 and ACH 235 or concurrent enrollment of ACH 235 with permission of department chair.

Course Outcomes:

Determine solutions in complex kitchen and bath environments
- Design original kitchens and baths in luxury environments for new construction
- Adhere to specific criteria such as ADA standards, space limitations, building restrictions for kitchen and bath remodel
- Plot solutions using CADD and industry standard software
- Follow NKBA guidelines when problem solving
Evaluate criteria of project situations including universal design and ADA requirements
- Critique criteria content specified to trouble shoot missing and vague components
- Discuss possible solutions of the criteria
- Develop rough alternate plans to project solutions
Incorporate hand drafting and CADD in the design documents for presentation
- Expand hand drafting skills
- Apply CADD and industry specific software throughout the projects
- Incorporate manufacturers’ software for FF & E (furniture, fixtures, and equipment)
Create solutions for residential kitchens and baths following NKBA guidelines
- Utilize NKBA toolkit to validate design solutions
- Visit showrooms of NKBA kitchen and bath designers and their client projects in progress
- Acquaint self with NKBA changes through their website
- Associate with NKBA members through monthly meetings and annual conferences
Present solutions before an audience
- Invite outside guests to observe and evaluate the project solutions
- Display projects prior to completion for critique of possible alternatives
- Justify final solutions to an audience of your peers
Access design solutions
- Evaluate oneself on effectiveness of design solutions
- Analyze design solutions of peers
