ENG 201 - Creative Writing: Beginning Fiction Workshop

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
Build on the craft elements of writing fiction introduced in ENG 200 . Complete weekly exercises designed to teach important aspects of structure, tone, point-of-view, imagery, metaphor, character development, plot and voice. Develop a portfolio of short stories and/or chapters for a novel. Practice the workshop method to discuss student writing, foster critical thinking and develop individual styles.

Prerequisite(s): ENG 200  or permission of department chair.

Note: Typically offered at MC and OL; fall and spring terms.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Analyze work written by established and contemporary short story and fiction writers and recognize themes and techniques.
  2. Write competent and original fiction.
  3. Use a range of literary terms and techniques to discuss their own stories and the stories of their peers.
  4. Critique the stories of their peers in a workshop environment.
  5. Revise their stories by integrating critique from instructor and peers into their revision process.
  6. Articulate how they are using critique to raise their work to a higher standard.
  7. Prepare a submission for literary journals and publications.
