LGS 143 - Legal Research and Writing 1

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
Learn techniques of legal research and writing with an emphasis on legal research. Explore topics that include issue identification, an overview of the research process and the American system of law, primary and secondary sources of law, citators, and legal citations. Learn and apply writing skills to complete memoranda and case briefs. Lab fee $10.

Prerequisite(s): Grade of C or better in LGS 111 or permission of legal studies director.

Note: Typically offered at MC and OL; fall, spring, and summer terms.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

Recognize the different types of sources of law.
Recognize the structure of the American court system.
Identify and locate primary sources of law.
Identify and locate secondary sources of law.
Shepardize and Instacite legal authorities.
Use basic legal citations.
Write a case brief.
Research and write a Law Office Memorandum.
