LGS 230 - Employment Law

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
Study the impact of state and federal laws upon employment relationships. Explore substantive and procedural aspects of employment law, focusing on worker’s compensation, employment discrimination, pensions and health benefits, wage and hour laws, and labor relations. Lab fee $10.

Prerequisite(s): BPA 172  or BPA 253 or LGS 111  or LGS 253  or permission of legal studies director.

Note: Typically offered at MC and OL; fall and spring terms.

Course Outcomes:
 

  1. Classify employment for the purpose of analyzing vicarious liability.
  2. Classify employment for the purpose of applying wage and hour laws.
  3. Draft a valid and enforceable employment contract with appropriate restrictive covenants.
  4. Draft a demand letter for unpaid wages.
  5. Prepare a Worker’s Compensation claim.
  6. Prepare an EEOC complaint.
  7. Draft a complaint for damages related to ERISA and/or COBRA violations.
  8. Explain the role the NLRB takes in organized labor and labor relations.
  9. Draft employment policies.
