LPN 180 - Fundamentals of Practical Nursing

8 credit hours - 75 hours of lecture and 90 hours of laboratory/clinical per term; one term.
Learn the role of the practical nurse as provider, manager and member within the discipline of nursing in a team relationship. Focus on the concepts, principles and skills used in assessing and providing basic care for patients. Opportunities to practice skills and demonstrate competencies are provided. Lab fee $400. Clinical fee $300.

Prerequisite(s): BIO 231 , BIO 232  or equivalent, PSY 111  and Math General Education with grades of C or better. Acceptance into the Practical Nursing (LPN) program.

Note: Typically offered at MC; summer term.

Course Outcomes:
 

  • Demonstrates accountability for maintaining the standards of practice to include holistic care across the settings, legal / ethical behaviors and life-long learning in concert with the Maryland Nurse Practice Act for the Licensed Practical Nurse.
    • Discuss the roles of the practical nurse: Provider of care, and member within the health care team.
    • Within the health care team, develop a written nursing care plan including appropriate data collection and interventions and evaluation criteria.
    • With guidance is able to satisfactorily demonstrate relevant course competencies in the clinical setting.
  • Utilizes appropriate and therapeutic communication to promote positive patient outcomes.
    • Develops a care plan for selected patients utilizing principles of therapeutic communication.
    • Utilizes appropriate nursing diagnosis, developed by the Registered Nurse (RN), related to therapeutic communication skills when interacting with patient to reach desired health care goals.
  • Assesses holistically and systematically, the health status of individuals, families and communities to determine health care needs.
    • Identify indication of optimal functioning as well as nursing interventions with rationales in the following systems: sensorimotor, gas transport, nutrition / regulatory, elimination, protective, psychosocial and perceptual / behavioral.
    • Assesses individualized health status of selected patients.
    • Utilizes appropriate nursing diagnosis developed by the Registered Nurse (RN) related to assisting selected patients in reaching desired health care goals.
  • Utilizes critical thinking skills within the framework of three (3) steps of the nursing process to ensure the delivery of safe, accurate care.
    • Solves problems using basic research, analysis and interpretation.
    • Utilize critical thinking skills in the formulation of selected patient’s care plan.
    • Demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills in caring for patients in the clinical setting.
  • Provides nursing care based on the understanding of the sciences, humanities, nursing theory, research and personal experiences that is global, culturally relevant and maintains patient’s rights and dignity.
    • Define the nursing process.

    • Apply the nursing process in development of concept maps for selected patients.

    • Utilizes appropriate teaching / learning principles to aid patient in reaching desire health care goals.
  • Collaborates with patients, families and other members of the health care team to ensure holistic, individualized care with appropriate allocation of human and material resources across the health care continuum.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of roles of members of the health team.
    • Function as a member of the health team.
  • Coordinates through direct intervention and delegation of care, the safe and accurate care of multiple patients in sub acute health care settings.
    • Integrate principles of drug administration, drug classifications, indications and adverse effect to rationale for administration of specific drugs.
    • Within the health care team, develops a care plan for selected patients
    • Discuss the importance of cultural diversity as it influences approaches to health assessment and health care outcomes.
    • With guidance is satisfactorily able to care for patients in clinical settings.
