MAT 100 - The Nature of Mathematics

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This course meets the Mathematics General Education Requirement

Encounter mathematical reasoning through an exposure to inductive methods, problem-solving techniques and the organization of information to discover patterns. Explore geometric topics and the connections between mathematics, the arts, and the social sciences. Study topics such as management science, sequences, fractals, mathematics of finance, probability and statistics.

Prerequisite(s): Achieve an appropriate score on the mathematics part of the ACT or SAT, or score at an appropriate level on the Mathematics Placement Test, or completion of MAT 034 or MAT 012 or MAT 012E or MAT 013B with a grade of at least C, or successful completion of an approved mathematics preparation course.

Apply elements of management science to solve routing and planning problems.
Recognize patterns and represent those relations symbolically.
Interpret mathematical information presented verbally, numerically, graphically, and symbolically.
Draw inferences from mathematical models such as formulas, graphs, and tables.
Describe how mathematics is employed in diverse areas such as art, architecture, the social sciences, and nature.
Apply interest formulas to solve problems involving savings and loans.
Solve problems involving what one can afford to achieve a financial goal.
