MUS 260 - History of Music 1

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly, one term.
Examine the development of music in the western world from the period of ancient Greece to the middle baroque period. Emphasis on a stylistic analysis of the music.

Prerequisite(s): MUS 101  or permission of department.

Note: Although MUS 260 and MUS 261  can be taken in either order, the sequential order is recommended. Typically offered at MC; fall and spring.

 

Course Outcomes:

1. Identify significant Western art music composers and works from antiquity, the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.
2. Analyze components of select musical styles and compositions exemplary of antiquity, the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.
3. Apply understanding of stylistic trends through aural recognition and score analysis of music of antiquity, the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.
4. Evaluate social and cultural trends that give shape to musical expression of antiquity, the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.
