NUR 150 - Introduction to Perioperative Nursing

2 credit hours - 18 hours of lecture and 40 hours laboratory/clinical per term.
Provides the nursing student with the basic knowledge of the perioperative environment. This elective course provides theoretical and clinical experience to introduce the student to the role and function of the perioperative nurse. The emphasis is on the role of the nurse in the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative phases.

Prerequisite(s): NUR 120 , NUR 121 , NUR 122 , NUR 130  and NUR 131 .

Course Outcomes:

  • Discuss and identify the role of the perioperative nurse and team
  • Identify sources of data collection
  • Verify the components necessary for effective hand-off communication.
  • Explain the necessary componentsl of the health assessment and health history.
  • Explain the role of the nurse in ensuring patient safety in the perioperative setting.
  • Identify the frequently applied North American Nursing Diagnosis Association(NANDA) diagnostic labels for actual and potential nursing diagnosis during the perioperative period.
  • State the safe medication practices.
  • Identify the principles of asceptic technique and surgical conscience.
  • Demonstrate the steps in performing the surgical scrub, gowning and gloving.
  • Recognize sharps and count safety.
  • Demonstrate measures to prevent injuries through proper positioning of the surgical patient.
  • Recognize and culture and diversity in the perioperative setting.
