SGT 102 - Principles of Surgical Technology 26 credit hours - 45 hours of lecture and 90 hours of laboratory; one term. Explore and discuss the role of the surgical technologist. Demonstrate the skills necessary to perform their duties as part of the surgical team. Lab fee $500.
Prerequisite(s): SGT 100 with a grade of C or better.
Note: Typically offered at MC; fall term.
Course Outcomes:
- Discuss the history of surgical technology and the importance of professional credentials in the health care environment.
- Analyze the legal responsibilities of members of the surgical team.
- Explain the role of technology in health care and its impact in the surgical setting.
- Identify the key elements related to developing a surgical conscience and demonstrate an understanding of how those elements apply to every aspect of professional behavior.
- Demonstrate principles of communication and teamwork found in the surgical setting.
- Identify the needs of the surgical patient throughout the perioperative process.
- Develop an increased awareness of matters related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the medical and surgical setting.
- Perform a complete mock surgical procedure by implementing the knowledge and skills required to perform in the first scrub role.
