SGT 102 - Principles of Surgical Technology 2

6 credit hours - 45 hours of lecture and 90 hours of laboratory; one term.
Explore and discuss the role of the surgical technologist. Demonstrate the skills necessary to perform their duties as part of the surgical team. Lab fee $500.

Prerequisite(s): SGT 100  with a grade of C or better.

Note: Typically offered at MC; fall term.

Course Outcomes:
  1. Discuss the history of surgical technology and the importance of professional credentials in the health care environment.
  2. Analyze the legal responsibilities of members of the surgical team.
  3. Explain the role of technology in health care and its impact in the surgical setting.
  4. Identify the key elements related to developing a surgical conscience and demonstrate an understanding of how those elements apply to every aspect of professional behavior.
  5. Demonstrate principles of communication and teamwork found in the surgical setting.
  6. Identify the needs of the surgical patient throughout the perioperative process.
  7. Develop an increased awareness of matters related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the medical and surgical setting.
  8. Perform a complete mock surgical procedure by implementing the knowledge and skills required to perform in the first scrub role.
