ASL 211 - American Sign Language 43 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. Build upon the skills learned from ASL 210 American Sign Language 3 , utilizing two to three role shifts, anecdotes, information sharing and rules explanation. Define and describe settings, and the function of objects, processes, and cause and effect. Discuss cultural norms and values of the deaf community.
Prerequisite(s): ASL 114 with a grade of C or better.
Note: Students may enroll in ASL 114 and ASL 211 concurrently with permission of academic chair and completion of ASL 210 with a grade of C or better. Typically offered at MC; fall and spring terms.
Course Outcomes:
- Examine general themes and issues in the realm of American Sign Language (ASL) and the Deaf communities.
- Distinguish between appropriate ASL grammatical structures and English-influenced structures.
- Summarize personal events by using diamond-structure dialogue format.
- Explore the mechanisms of learning and language acquisition.
- Distinguish between signing word-for-word as opposed to conveying concepts.
- Explore learning new vocabulary with using activities to prepare for real-life application.
- Recognize the constant evolution of languages, including ASL.
- Explore trends and norms in social settings.
- Describe what are norms and values in Deaf culture.
- Contrast conformity and independence.
- Review components of attitudes and how they are perceived in the Deaf and hearing communities.
- Explore areas of language and response.
- Explore responses by confirming, correcting, agreeing, and disagreeing.
- Explore the areas of language and expression.
- Explore expression by complaining, expressing concerns, making suggestions and requests.
- Explore opinions of activities.
- Explore the art of retelling stories.
