CHE 214H - Organic Chemistry 2 - Honors4 credit hours - Three hours of lecture and three hours of laboratory weekly; one term. This is an honors course.
Study the chemistry of the families of organic compounds, emphasizing preparations, reactions, and mechanisms of reactions. Learn to apply spectroscopy to determine structure, and preview compounds of biological importance. Synthesize representative organic compounds in the laboratory. Use modern methods of analysis, including infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Lab fee $70.
Prerequisite(s): CHE 213 or CHE 213H and eligibility for Honors courses.
Crosslisted: Also offered as CHE 214 ; credit is not given for both CHE 214H and CHE 214 .
Course Outcomes: 1. Deduce structures of compounds using mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy data.
2. Demonstrate an understanding* of the chemistry of benzene and its derivatives.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the chemistry of alcohols and phenols.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the chemistry of ethers, epoxides, thiols, and sulfides.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of the chemistry of aldehydes and ketones.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of the chemistry of carboxylic acids and nitriles.
7. Demonstrate an understanding of the chemistry of carboxylic acid derivatives.
8. Explain the general reactions of carbonyl compounds.
9. Demonstrate an understanding of the chemistry of amines and heterocyclic compounds.
10. Design organic syntheses so as to demonstrate integration of course learning outcomes.
11. Describe the properties of biologically important compounds such as carbohydrates, amino acids, peptides, proteins, and lipids.
12. Develop skill in organic laboratory techniques and procedures, including structure determination and qualitative analysis, as well as safety and other techniques introduced in CHE 213.
