MEC 230 - Electric Motor Fundamentals

3 credit hours - Three hours lecture and directed lab weekly; one term.
Learn the fundamentals of  AC and DC motor types commonly found in industry along with their related control technologies. Explore specifications, operation, starting, braking, overload protection, basic troubleshooting, and variable frequency drives. Demonstrate comprehension through hands-on labs while exercising proper industry safety procedures. Lab fee $30.

Prerequisite(s): EET 130  or permission of engineering department chair.

Note: Typically offered MC; spring term.

Course Outcomes:
 

  1. Install and operate DC and AC motors according to manufacturer specifications
  2. Demonstrate proper electric motor safety procedures
  3. Identify and describe common causes for DC and AC motor failures
  4. Apply various control methodologies to DC and AC motors
  5. Perform basic VFD parameter programming to control AC motors
