ART 244 - Materials and Methods of Painting and Drawing

3 credit hours - Two hours of lecture and two hours of studio weekly; one term.
Explore historical and contemporary art media associated with painting and drawing by making studio projects. Work directly with art materials, and learn techniques and best practices based on their physical properties. By experimenting with a range of media, discover which materials are best suited for your art trajectory. Explore media including silverpoint, ink, egg tempera, oil glazes, acrylic, and airbrush; and substrates including paper, canvas, and panels. Lab fee $40.

Prerequisite(s): ART 100  or ART 125  or permission of department chair. 

Note: Typically offered at MC; fall and spring terms.

Course Outcomes:
 

  1. Understand the contributions of artists and inventors globally and across time to contemporary practices in two-dimensional studio arts.
  2. Develop technical proficiency with a range of two-dimensional art materials.
  3. Create two-dimensional art studies that underscore the role of materials and methods in good composition.
  4. Analyze the esthetic features of two-dimensional art studies made by themselves and others.
