DHY 100 - Dental Hygiene Theory 1

2 credit hours - Two lecture hours weekly; one term.
Discuss the fundamental concepts of oral health care services, disease control, infection control practices, dental hygiene instrumentation, and assessment techniques. Identify and define concepts of client motivation, educational techniques, disease prevention strategies, and the dental hygiene process of care. 

Prerequisite(s): Acceptance into the Dental Hygiene Program.

Corequisite(s): DHY 102 , DHY 104 , DHY 106 , DHY 108 .

Course Outcomes:
  1. Define the role of a dental hygienist and the impact they have on oral health.
  2. Describe and demonstrate infection control protocols in clinical settings.
  3. Perform patient assessments such as medical/dental/psychological history, intra- and extra-oral exam, and measure vital signs.
  4. Demonstrate basic skills in documentation of notes using an electronic medical record system.
  5. Describe and perform proper positioning of patient and clinician.
  6. Demonstrate correct instrumentation techniques for basic instruments and describe their function.
