AMS 211 - Gender and Mass Media in the United States3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. This course meets the Diversity Requirement.
Learn principles of contemporary mass media scholarship. Examine how media creates and perpetuates constructions of masculinity and femininity and how these constructions relate to race, ethnicity, class, sexuality and other variables of difference. Explore the political economy of media production, the relationship between media and ideology and audience reception.

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Analyze media representation through intersectional and interdisciplinary lenses.
- Examine the ways in which culture reflects, creates, perpetuates, and/or resists social hierarchies and structural inequalities.
- Explain the political economy of media production and dissemination in conversation with critical discussions of audience reception and consumption.
