ASL 210 - American Sign Language 3

3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term.
This course meets the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement. 

Build on skills learned in American Sign Language 2, adding more complex ASL grammatical features and vocabulary, short stories, narratives and dialogues. Learn discourse skills including description of general surroundings, appropriate sequencing, temporal aspects and conditionals. Learn about the deaf community and deaf culture.

Prerequisite(s): ASL 112  with a grade of C or better or permission of department chair.

Course Outcomes:
 

  1. Distinguish between ASL and English-influenced sentence structures.
  2. Distinguish between signing word for word and concepts.
  3. Identify regional variations of signs.
  4. Describe some norms and values in the Deaf community.
  5. Differentiate responses with confirmation, correction, agreement, and disagreement.
  6. Differentiate between complaining, expressing concerns, and making suggestions and requests.
  7. Provide constructive criticism of peers’ signing skills.
  8. Identify objects by their size, texture, and other features.
