COM 141 - Group Communication and Leadership3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. This course meets the Arts & Humanities General Education Requirement.
Learn principles and procedures for effective communication in small groups. Develop leadership skills for use in business, community and other task-oriented work teams. Gain experience with various types of formal and informal group organization methods, member roles and communication formats. Evaluate group processes and outcomes in interpersonal, peer, and virtual groups and teams.
Prerequisite(s): Eligibility for ENG 101 /ENG 101A .
Note: Typically offered at MC and OL; fall, spring, and summer terms.
Course Outcomes:
- Identify different kinds of groups, the elements of small group discussion, and the advantages and disadvantages of group work;
- Apply knowledge of group norms and group development in small group discussions
- Apply knowledge of group planning and participation procedures in small group discussions;
- Apply knowledge of group task and maintenance roles, verbal and non-verbal communication, and listening in small group discussions;
- Apply knowledge of leadership power structures in small group discussions;
- Apply conflict resolution skills in group settings;
- Apply knowledge of group decision-making skills in group settings.
