EDU 131 - Children’s Literature

Examine literary trends and materials for young children. Explore specific genres, curriculum issues, authors and illustrators, literature selection and teaching strategies.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Identify significant milestones, contemporary issues, debates, and trends in children’s literature.

2. Describe the cognitive and affective development patterns of children with reference to their ability to comprehend themes, plots, and values in literature.

3. Identify genres and types of literature for children.

4. Apply norms of critical judgment to select and evaluate books for children.

5. Discuss the impact of diverse authors in children’s literature.

6. Identify various activities for integrating literature across the curriculum.
