EDU 245 - Materials for Teaching Reading3 credit hours - Three hours weekly; one term. Select, evaluate, and organize materials for teaching reading, writing, and related literacy skills. Identify characteristics of effective literacy programming and instruction. Use a variety of strategies to engage students with print and multimedia resources for the purpose of reading and writing. Examine how best to provide culturally responsive literacy instruction that promotes all students’ cultural competence through inclusive and equitable literacy learning opportunities. EDU 245 is a Maryland State Department of Education approved reading course.
Prerequisite(s): A bachelor’s degree and seeking teacher certification or permission from department chair.

Course Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Use evidenced-based criteria to select and organize a variety of instructional materials that support the purposes for reading and writing
- Identify characteristics of effective literacy programming and instruction
- Identify strategies for engaging students with print and multimedia resources as readers and writers across the curriculum
- Evaluate print and multimedia resources to determine appropriateness for reader developmental level, interest, fluency, cultural background, and students with limited English proficiency
